Harmony Lady Eagles 'run away' from competitionBy CHARLES JOHNSON UNION GROVE — Harmony’s Lady Eagles literally “ran away†with the District 18-2A Track and Field championship held last week at Union Grove’s Glyn Johnston stadium. Coach Dee Byrd’s “thinclads†ran up a total of 198 points to easily outdistance Jefferson which had 88. Union Grove was third with 86 points. Harmony’s Whitney Trimble was the high point athlete in the meet as she amassed 38 points in four events winning three golds and one silver medal. Teammate Jenny DeGoede was close on her heels as she totaled 35 points to finish in second place in the individual point totals. Lady Eagle Emily Metcalf tied for sixth in the overall competition with 18 points. Trimble took first place in the triple jump, high jump, and long jump events. She also took second place in the 100M hurdles. DeGoede won the 400M dash, finished second in the long jump and triple jump, anchored the second place 400M relay team, and anchored the winning 1600M relay team. DeGoede was several meters behind the leader when she took the baton on the last leg of the 1600M relay, but she quickly caught up as Harmony beat Jefferson by almost two seconds. Other gold medal winners for Harmony include: Katie Wilson, 1600M run; Christie McKinney, 800M run; and the 1600M relay team of Metcalf, DeGoede, Katie Hosea and Chelbi McCoy. Silver medalists included: Katie Houston, high jump; Raney Pierce, pole vault; Hosea, 300M hurdles; and the 400M relay team of Amber Anderson, Metcalf, McCoy and DeGoede. The first, second and third place finishers at district will be competing in the Regional meet at Palestine on April 27 and 28. Other Lady Eagles contributing points to the team total included: Caroline Spencer, 3rd in 1600M and 5th in 3200M runs; Amber Maberry, 5th in 800M and 6th in 3200M ; Kara Parsons, 4th in 300M hurdles and 5th in 100M hurdles; Houston, 5th, 300M hurdles; Metcalf, 3rd, long jump; Anna McNeel, 5th, discus; Courtney Burnett, 3rd, pole vault; Chelsea Roberts, 6th, high jump; Chelbi McCoy, 4th, 400M dash; and the 800M relay team of Cynda Covington, Sammi Jo Chapman, Metcalf and Anderson finished third. Coach Dee Byrd expressed great pride in the accomplishment of her girls in winning district. “I have coached the seniors on this team since they were in the seventh grade.
