'Green Works for Gilmer' project launched

By GILMER ISD

Environmental Education Project Green Works for Gilmer, will involve about 1,200 students from Kindergarten to Sixth Grade in the establishment of approximately six acres of native grasses and wildflowers. As part of the Earth Day 2007 celebration, Gilmer Independent School District is partnering with Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO).

The students will invest their time, energy and effort into the project scheduled for April 23-27, the week following the official Earth Day which is April 22. SWEPCO will provide funding for all the seeds and additional volunteers for the April 24 planting day. In addition to the planting, students will also construct compost bins to learn how nature recycles material in the soil.

"Stewardship of our natural resources is an important part of children's science education,” commented Nancy Tevebaugh, Elementary Science Specialist for the District. “Through this project we hope children learn the environmental value of using native plants and composting. Knowledge gained through these experiences should help them to make wise decisions regarding use of natural resources in the future.” Spokesman for SWEPCO, Kelly Spencer, noted, “Projects such as Green Works for Gilmer are good for the community and for all of us who make our home in this area. The grasses we are planting will use less water and require less maintenance. SWEPCO is proud to be a corporate partner with Gilmer ISD in educating children on sustainable environmental initiatives."

This project is one of many planned for the property adjacent to the Elementary and Intermediate Campuses. “We’re excited that our kids are getting out and making a difference,” said Rick Albritton, Gilmer ISD Superintendent. “Local natural resource agencies, Master Gardeners and consultants at the Native American Seed Company have given us hours of advice and support in our efforts here and we are excited to begin our Green Works for Gilmer Project in accordance with Earth Day – a great time to learn more about our earth and our natural resources.”

The Home Depot in Longview and Brookshire’s in Gilmer also donated materials and supplies for the plantings.
